Gutters have been a hot topic around our office for the past few weeks. It may sound boring, but cleaning your gutters should be one of the most important projects on your home maintenance to-do list. Unfortunately, this task is often one of the most overlooked. If you procrastinate too long, you may be looking at arduous work and a major hit on your bank account.
The gutter system of your home or investment property is designed to methodically move water down from the roof and away from the dwelling and the foundation. When the gutters are full of leaves and debris, water builds up and eventually will find somewhere else to go. Very often, this will end up being through the walls and ceilings of your home. Overflowing water will also damage paint and siding. Unfortunately, this water can also work it's way inside the structure and go unnoticed. This results in an even more expensive and devastating issue by causing wood rot. Wood rot seriously comprises the integrity of the structure of your home.
Weight is another serious and more obvious issue. As leaves and debris are left to accumulate in the gutters, water is absorbed and becomes heavier and heavier. Eventually the strain becomes too much and there is only one place to go... down. This is not only a costly headache but a safety concern as well.
Believe it or not, clogged gutters can even cause your basement, crawlspace and foundation serious problems. If the gutter system is not properly directing water away from your house, it is left to puddle and accumulate around the foundation. This water can freeze in the right conditions and cause cracks. And yes, you guessed it, this leads to flooding.
Don't fall victim to an issue that could so easily be avoided. Simply CLEAN THOSE GUTTERS! Get on a schedule of having your gutters cleaned at least twice a year. If your property is heavily wooded, consider doing it more often. Get this task out of the way and enjoy the crisp autumn days to come. Happy Fall!
