Pruning the Crepe Myrtles

Marc Chernau - Wednesday, February 01, 2017

Just a reminder that its time to cut those fast growing crepe myrtles back, way back.  You need to do it now, early February and no later than Feb 20th.  Heavy pruning should not hurt these hearty trees and they will be beautiful once again for this years late Spring / Summer season.  Not sure how to?  Watch this video from Southern Living.

Need to cut hedges, shrubs and other limbs?  This is also the time of year for me and my fellow Southerners to get it done.  If you are unsure of your species of plant or tree, please get some advice from the professionals at your local nursery.

Fall Maintenance Tips: Gutter Clutter

Marc Chernau - Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Gutters have been a hot topic around our office for the past few weeks.  It may sound boring, but cleaning your gutters should be one of the most important projects on your home maintenance to-do list. Unfortunately, this task is often one of the most overlooked.  If you procrastinate too long, you may be looking at arduous work and a major hit on your bank account.

The gutter system of your home or investment property is designed to methodically move water down from the roof and away from the dwelling and the foundation.  When the gutters are full of leaves and debris, water builds up and eventually will find somewhere else to go.  Very often, this will end up being through the walls and ceilings of your home.  Overflowing water will also damage paint and siding.  Unfortunately, this water can also work it's way inside the structure and go unnoticed.  This results in an even more expensive and devastating issue by causing wood rot. Wood rot seriously comprises the integrity of the structure of your home.

Weight is another serious and more obvious issue.  As leaves and debris are left to accumulate in the gutters, water is absorbed and becomes heavier and heavier.  Eventually the strain becomes too much and there is only one place to go... down.  This is not only a costly headache but a safety concern as well.

Believe it or not, clogged gutters can even cause your basement, crawlspace and foundation serious problems.  If the gutter system is not properly directing water away from your house, it is left to puddle and accumulate around the foundation.  This water can freeze in the right conditions and cause cracks.  And yes, you guessed it, this leads to flooding.

Don't fall victim to an issue that could so easily be avoided.  Simply CLEAN THOSE GUTTERS!  Get on a schedule of having your gutters cleaned at least twice a year.  If your property is heavily wooded, consider doing it more often.  Get this task out of the way and enjoy the crisp autumn days to come.  Happy Fall!

Area Growth Rate Slows

Web Admin - Monday, August 19, 2013

AJC contributor Ariel Hart recently published an article detailing the Atlanta area's slowed growth rate.  The 10 county region that comprises the area shows a growth of 40,100 people in the latest data from April 2012 to April 2013.  In comparison, the Atlanta Regional Commission estimates that from 1990 to 2010 the same region added about 77,000 people per year.

One of the indicators used by the ARC is the number of building permits.  This year's recovery is the strongest in a period of recovery over the last three years.  Although this is nowhere near the number in years past, it is still an indicator of recovery.
